Salaam

Event information

A spectacular show uniting beautiful, energetic and visually stunning dance, spellbinding live music and exquisite costumes. Astounding tabla music by a world-renowned virtuoso paves the way into mesmerisingly graceful and intricate Kathak (the classical style of north India). An absolute joy to behold, and a fantastic introduction to Indian dance. 'A dynamic performer with her own spin on the Indian classical tradition.' Metro 'Fine, intense, and intelligent.' The Times ______________________________________________________________________ 'Salaam' ('peace') is the Sonia Sabri Company's latest double programme, with a stunning presentation of solo tabla music and Kathak dance. It opens with mesmerising music by Sarvar Sabri, an internationally renowned tabla player and composer with a musical lineage stretching back ten generations to the Royal Court of the Mughal Emperor Akbar. An absolute joy to listen to, the intricate finger-work and rhythmic compositions are spellbinding. And then Sonia Sabri brings her spirited and distinctive personal style to exhilarating Kathak dance, with evocative live music and vocal accompaniment. This is an exhilarating dance experience, with astounding displays of precise footwork, eloquent gesture, rapid turns and heart-pounding rhythms. A breath of fresh air in the South Asian dance world, Sonia Sabri is acclaimed as the foremost Kathak dancer of her generation, an artist who is forging an individual path revered by dance veterans and audiences worldwide. Produced in association with the Rural Touring Dance Initiative (making the best dance happen in small spaces), supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England. ______________________________________________________________________ 'Expressive grace... switches effortlessly from romantic, courtly purity to an effervescent explosion of speed and flashing eyes.'
