Tongue Tied & Twisted

Event information

This family duo of master storyteller and live DJ adds a fresh twist to a compelling collection of near-forgotten South Asian fables gathered from Punjabi elders living in the Black Country. With Peter Chand's cheeky smile, wry humour, and rich voice accompanied by a smart onstage soundtrack of contemporary and classical South Asian music, this energetic and endlessly inventive storytelling show is a triumph. 'Transports the listener with remarkable energy and great expression… spellbinding.' BBC Radio 4 ______________________________________________________________________ 'Once our hearts and minds connect to a story, we rarely forget it.' Punjabi/Midlands storyteller Peter Chand builds a bridge to ancient times with stories, poems, riddles, songs and prayers that have entertained people across centuries. Whilst DJ nephew Pavan provides an atmospheric cinematic musical soundscape - weaving South Asian music with street sounds and verbatim voices - to these lovingly collected traditional tales. Storytelling used to play a huge part in the lives of many South Asian families as people learned life lessons through stories. But the tradition of passing folk tales down through the generations is dying out. A labour of love, this show preserves a rich collection of stories handed down (but not written down) before they are lost forever. An energetic, totally engaging, celebration of the art of live storytelling, and one of the most warm and compelling pieces of theatre to be seen this year. Produced in association with Black Country Touring and Creative Black Country. ______________________________________________________________________ 'Brings a unique UK twist to tales collected by Punjabi elders, reworking Indian storytelling for the 21st century.' Time Out 'Peter is a storyteller with a foot in two cultures - West Midlands and the Punjab - and his entertaining and energetic style thrills audiences of all ages.'
