This is my latest song called Caplight 2023: https://stevehaywood.bandcamp.com/track/caplight-brass-and-chorale-mix
I’ve just finished the final version of Caplight 2023. This is the brass band arrangement and male voice choir version.
I was a miner at Markham Colliery during the 80s. Caplight describes three typical scenes from working down the mine.
Working on the Northern Drift was like being on the seafront in winter, clearing coal from around the conveyors, with the main intake fan drawing down a freezing gale.
The coal face teams working the shearers and advancing the chocks were some of the mining elite. We had to be on a waiting list to get onto a face team.
The last scene describes working on the haulage sometimes called being “on the tackle.” Moving trams of mining equipment up an old return gate such as “209s” was like being in the tropics, as most of the ventilation air was exhausted.
