Introducing The Arts Derbyshire Trustees – Simon Hobbs

Arts Derbyshire is supported by a team of trustees. The Arts Derbyshire board of trustees’ work supports our goal of enriching people’s lives through the arts. As well as supporting Derbyshire’s art scene through Arts Derbyshire, our trustees also have personal links to the creative sector, with many of them being artists themselves. Although you may have read about our trustees already here, in this series we want to introduce you to each Arts Derbyshire Trustee and let them tell you about their story and relationship with the Derbyshire arts scene.

In this article, we would like to introduce you to our Trustee Simon Hobbs.

Simon is a retired lawyer who worked for over thirty years in the public sector where he held a series of senior legal appointments ending up as deputy director of legal services at the county council.

Simon has a  particular interest in the corporate governance of an organisation in its widest sense including promoting high ethical standards, the transparent management of risk and the incorporation of community engagement into decision making processes.

Why are you a trustee with Arts Derbyshire?

I have a strong interest in a broad range of arts including ceramics, painting, opera  and music. I am also a keen reader and writer. I gave the 2012 Derby Lecture on the (neglected) Derbyshire Victorian poet John Gisborne and, since then,  have edited a book of family letters from the second world war and just finished writing a novel based on  real events in Derbyshire in the 1860’s.

I  joined the organisation quite recently but have already been impressed by the dedication of the excellent staff  and trustee team and  am keen to work closely with them, as well as with newly appointed trustees,to promote the full range of arts in the county.
As Vice Chair, as well as supporting the Chair in her work at a very exciting and busy time for the organisation, I am hoping to bring this work experience to bear to the benefit of Arts Derbyshire.
