Building Bridges 2025 – Introducing the Artists

A huge congratulations to artists Tim Baker and Venus Behjati, who have been selected as our representatives from Derby for the Building Bridges 2025 residency! The two artists will embark on a journey to Derby’s twin city, Osnabrück, in Germany, where they will respond to the residency theme. We’re really excited to see how they embrace and explore this opportunity!

TIM BAKER
Tim Baker is a musician and sound artist exploring the physicality of sound, human perception, and sensory experience. With a degree in Music, Technology, and Performance from DeMontfort University, he has developed a distinctive practice, exploring the physical nature of sound, human perception, and accessibility in music. Originally from Birmingham, he is now based in Derby, UK.

His influences span from John Cage to Korn, incorporating elements of rock, minimalism, and sonic art. From 2021 to 2023, he was Resident Music Artist at Sense, creating musical experience for and with people with complex disabilities. His work has featured in productions by Enter Edem, and he recently received Arts Council England funding to develop his practice.

Currently, Tim is pioneering new methods of composing and experiencing vibroacoustic music, consulting with Dame Evelyn Glennie and working with d/Deaf and aurally diverse musicians. His goal is to challenge conventional listening experiences by crafting installation pieces where music is embedded in physical objects, allowing audiences to engage with sound in a deeply embodied way.

VENUS BEHJATI
“I am an Iranian female interdisciplinary artist based in Derby, UK. I started painting when I was 5 years old and it has been my passion throughout my life.

My practice has been an expression of my life, interwoven with my personal experiences of receiving love or hate, hardship or joy, and the ongoing pursuit of art. The imagery turns dark or light as I discover more around me. The forms change, and colours gain and lose meaning with every epiphany. The only thing that remains constant is my unique reality, expressed through lines and brushstrokes.”
