Matlock Stories May 2019

Matlock Storytelling Cafe, would like you to join us for our next evening of storytelling, when Ursula Holden Gill returns on Friday 3rd May with The Bishoprick Garland (or to give it its full title: ‘The Bishoprick Garland or a Collection of Legends, Songs and Ballads Belonging to the County of Durham’).

If you haven't heard of Ursula here's what the Craven Herald said of her when she appeared at Settle Storytelling Festival " When Ursula Holden Gill steps on to the stage your first impression is of a Victorian urchin with a somewhat impish twinkle in her eyes. However, you very swiftly realize that she is in fact a one woman whirlwind able to inhabit any number of characters at the drop of a usually invisible hat! Her shows are very insightful and give much to think about. They are performed in an incredibly high octane style by a lady of great charm."

This time at Matlock she's telling tales based on a book which was compiled by Cuthbert Sharp in 1834. It features historical details of people, places, songs, poems and writers pertaining to the North East of England and in particular The Bishoprick of Durham. In 2018, Hartlepool Folk Festival commissioned Ursula to adapt some of the stories from the garland so that they might translate to modern audiences and along with a selection of beautifully arranged songs and ballads be celebrated as part of the North East’s traditional folk heritage for many years to come. Ursula enjoyed this process so much that she has since decided to share them with everyone!

We will also have the home grown talent of Gill Shimwell and a healthy smattering of other tellers and tales to provide a rich and rounded evening of storytelling. Matlock Storytelling Cafe is a unique night out in the heart of the Derbyshire Dales.

The candlelit tables foster a warm welcoming atmosphere. Soup, hot drinks and great cakes are available and you can bring your own booze, it is Friday night after all. Tickets are just £7. You can find us in the Imperial Rooms, Imperial Road, Matlock, DE43NL. Doors open at 6.45PM, be sitting comfortably by 7.30PM and we'll begin.
