THIS IS DERBY

Artcore have begun running an afterschool club with Arboretum Primary School this month with artist Nicki Dennett as part of the This is Derby project teaching the children about printmaking! This club, however, will not only teach the children new artistic skills. They will also be encouraged to explore their creativity and use their imagination to make interesting designs and patterns. They will also be develop key skills, including communication, planning and teamwork that will broaden their horizons and expand their opportunities in the future.

Sgt. Peppers

The Sgt. Pepper project for this is Derby has continued this month, with great success! Sgt. Peppers is a collaborative project over six workshops between young people and the artists Theresa Hempsall and Sophie Edwards. They will be working together to create a collage based on the Beetle’s album cover Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club. The children have been working very hard creating some amazing designs and have more about the history of Derby as they explore famous figures who have impacted the modern world, such as Florence Nightingale and Richard Arkwright. The project will end with a final, large commissioned piece from Sophie featuring the children’s work which will be exhibited in the Artcore Gallery. Don’t forget to visit Artcore Gallery from 30th May to 13th June 2019 to see the final piece of artwork from Sophie and view the children’s hard work!

Street Art Festival

Bringing the Street Art Festival project to THIS IS DERBY. It will take place over four months and introduce artistic ideas, techniques and skills to young people, culminating with a curated exhibition in July. A fun and educational atmosphere to help young people develop their idea generating and art creating skills! The workshops will encourage the children to formulate ideas in different and diverse ways and support their development of essential life skills, such as team work, problem solving and critical thinking.

Metropolitan Art Club

Since February Jane has been sharing her clay, mosaic and painting skills at this children's art club and we still have spaces left!

If you're interested please call 01332 384 561 to book your place. The session is on a first come first served basis and we do ask for parents to stay and support their children. We look forward to seeing you there!

Creative Living

As the first session of the summer kick-started, seniors participated in yoga movement exercises, working together and stretching their bodies together.

Steam

Enjoyed letting myself go’… ‘I’m in the zone’… In our Steam project we are working with three Year 6 classes to empower, build confidence and teach the young children creatively. This project engages three Year 6 classes with arts and science through contributing to a collaborative artwork for their School library wall. We’re including the teachers over the course of the project, which runs from November 2018 to July 2019. Each of the children taking part will create mosaics and clay works, and will have the opportunity to complete the Arts Award Discover over the course of the year. They have visited Artcore to see the Format Festival exhibition, learn about careers in the arts and hear from professional artists with the opportunity to ask questions to enhance their creativity.

April Stories

Artcore was proud to present The Institute of Reminiscence exhibition, in partnership with Format Festival 2019. The show included artworks by two artists in residence Mariano Doronzo and Olivia Punnett who engaged with ideas and possibilities that shaped the future of remembering.

For The Institute of Reminiscence Mariano Doronzo presented Slides on a Light Box, a project to light up and preserve some of the memories on the cusp of being lost forever. Collecting memories and stories from local people, Doronzo built up a new visual map of Derby by revisiting the places where they lived, worked and spent their free time. Many of these places no longer exist but will either have been deserted or replaced with new stories and life. Moreover Doronzo’s work documented how Derby has evolved, changed or stopped in time.

Olivia Punnett’s work responded in print, projection and sculpture to her personal interest in time & the remembered image, emotion of loss, moving closer to a sense of feeling that is time specific, a memory, a place, a moment; both concealment and revelation. Using photography as a starting point, the work also responds to the natural environment. Elemental Symbolism is present in prints and projections from water.

The exhibition was accompanied with an e-publication and catalogue richly illustrated with images from the exhibition and a conversation between Peter Bonnell (Senior Curator at Format Festival) and the two artists.

It was great to welcome new visitors to our building as part of the festival and share conversations about the thought provoking works:

‘The show was amazing! Loved all the stoves and heading how Derby was in the past.’

'I loved the idea of recording the varied reminiscences. Really important to speak to peoples about what they remember about their early memories about people & place, before those memories are last forever. Just about to go to an elderly relative’s funeral (died age 95) and found reminiscing very cathartic.'

'A very interesting exhibition, it was fun to remember how it used to be when I was girl. It’s interesting to hear the stores of lovely people. A new experience for most of the children, thank you.'

'A lovely exhibition, definitely stimulated ideas in our students & certainly woke some memories in me.'

'Lovely, nice space, love the sides projected'

'I thought these exhibition were great, I felt very touched by those photo and lot of memories come back to me so thank you a lot for these experiences especially when we got to meet an artist, so keep up the good work!'

'I think it was a very exciting and inspiring experiences to not only get surrounded by a beautiful gallery and hear a real artists life story but also see photography art and how they would view it before digital things like phone and ipads and I thought that was awesome thank you for the experience'

Our Stories - Celebration

The Our Stories programme, which Artcore has been running for the past two years, came to an end with a final celebratory event on 18th April alongside our Family Day. An exhibition of work created on the programme was on display, along with videos of interviews with the artists, participants and organisers involved in the delivery of the programme. We had an exciting talk from one of the artists who ran the programme, Theresa Hempsall, who spoke of how she enjoyed the opportunity to learn other peoples’ stories and share her own. Throughout the programme, over two-hundred people have had the chance to connect with others and tell their tale through the medium of art, and the success of the programme can only go so far as those involved. Artcore would like to thank all the artists who have given their time to run the workshops, the staff who helped to organize and the programme, and the participants for coming to Artcore to get involved in this exciting opportunity. And though this programme has ended, many other programmes still run at Artcore with the aim of creating a more integrated community and providing the opportunity for self-development through art.

More information on the past 2 years can be found here: http://www.artcoreuk.com/ourstories/

Jungle Book

Over the past four months, three primary schools worked together in collaboration to make the set performance for the production of Jungle Book at the beginning of April. The children worked really hard actively participating and creatively gathering their ideas on paper, seeing their creations come to life has been an exciting journey to witness!

We have explored various forms of art making; including stage designing and mask making. The children are keen to explore new ways of making and are developing key skills such as leadership, being part of a team and listening to each other to bring a solution together. The children’s performances on the 5th April demonstrated the incredible amount of effort put in by the children and the shows were a great success. It was exciting to witness the culmination of this project and it was amazing to be a part of it.

Family Days

On the 18th and 25th April Artcore held our Family Fundays for children and parents during the Easter holidays. On the 18th artist Dawn Campion led a workshop creating flowers from upcycled materials, such as canvas sacks, felt, straws and more! Participants had a lot of fun creating different colours and designs. There was also face painting available for the children and an embroidery workshop with Ekta Kaul, an artist from London. On the 25th Nicki Dennett lead a workshop creating Easter prints and baskets. Participants loved being able to put their baskets together, create their Easter designs and print them on and fill their basket with exciting little Easter egg treats! There was also the chance to buy authentic Indian food for lunch from Chilli Kitchen, and lots of people loved the opportunity to try something new! Overall, the Easter Family Days have been fully and booked and a great success.

Our next family day is on the 31st May 2018. If you would like to book on email admin@artcoreuk.com or call 01332 384561
