The Art of Healing – Community

These sessions are aimed at bringing the community together to build strong relationships and to improve mental health through the creative process.

Art of Healing Community Workshops: Creative Ceramics & Colourful Paintings

Our Community Group sessions with Kathryn have been a wonderful space for hands-on creativity! Participants explored ceramic techniques, crafting their own pinch pot and slab-formed painting palettes and bowls, before glazing them with colourful underglazes and a clear transparent stoneware glaze.

Beyond ceramics, they also experimented with painting techniques, using plastic bags, toilet roll tubes, and brushes to create stunning, decorative floral paintings. These sessions encouraged playful exploration of materials while producing vibrant, unique artworks.

The creative energy and enthusiasm in these workshops have been incredible and we can’t wait to see the final palettes and bowls fired!

Coming up next: We’re excited to welcome artist Jane Dearden from 15th April – 20th May. The group will be working on canvas creations to be displayed in Laverstoke Court in Derby, a unit that provides temporary housing, assessment, and signposting for refugees and asylum seekers.

The Art of Healing – Health & Wellbeing

Art of Healing: Health & Wellbeing Workshops with Jane Dearden

For six weeks, participants engaged in a series of inspiring canvas-based artwork sessions led by Jane Dearden, creating pieces designed to bring colour and joy to the corridors of Derby’s Florence Nightingale Hospital.

Each participant explored a range of themes, including:

  • A View from the Window – Capturing landscapes, gardens, beaches, cityscapes, or even portraits of people gazing through windows or balconies.
  • Animals in Art – From peacocks and butterflies to abstract sections of snail shells, these works combined paint and collage to create striking visual statements.

A huge thank you to every participant who contributed their creativity and talent to this meaningful project! The final outcomes look fantastic.

Coming up next: We welcome artist Chris Lewis Jones for sessions from 16th – 30th April, followed by Fi Marks from 7th – 21st May. We look forward to seeing more incredible artwork take shape in the weeks ahead!

Children’s Workshops

March was a month full of creativity at Artcore! We were thrilled to have artists Dani Bello and Fi Marks deliver engaging and inspiring workshops for young people.

Being Kind – “Mosaic of Positivity” (Mosaic Activity): Encouraging young people to reflect on positive relationships and self-appreciation by collaboratively creating a mosaic.

Safety – “Safe Space Sculptures” (3D Mixed Media Activity): Helping young people visualize safety and protection through 3D model-making.

Mixed Media Still Life
Participants explored still life through painting, drawing, and collage techniques, using acrylic pens and patterned paper to create vibrant compositions.

Portraits
Children developed their drawing skills by focusing on face proportions, details, and shading. They experimented with abstract styles, colour, and patterns to create expressive portraits.

Additionally, our Your Space My Space group worked with Neil Rowley to complete an incredible Arboretum Park-inspired display piece, featuring their own decorated pebbles!

Shape your future

In our Shape Your Future Workshops, Nicki has been guiding students as they continue their exploration of identity and community.

The students have been developing their own collaborative board games, each with unique styles and rules. Through this creative process, they have explored teamwork, strategy, and storytelling—designing games that reflect their ideas and experiences. This hands-on activity has been a fantastic way for them to connect, problem-solve, and bring their visions to life.

After weeks of effort, they had great fun playing the games together, celebrating their creativity and collaboration! A huge thank you to Nicki for working with the group since January. We’re now looking forward to Dani continuing with the students up to summer and supporting them as they prepare for their final exhibition.

Art For Life

Art For Life – Wednesdays 1:00pm-3:00pm

Our Art for Life class offers a fun and engaging opportunity to learn a variety of craft techniques in a warm and welcoming environment.

Recently, participants have been enjoying exploring rock painting, transforming ordinary stones into colorful, creative works of art. Alongside this, they’ve also taken part in seed sowing activities, combining creativity with nature by decorating pots and planting seeds to nurture at home.

We intentionally keep our class sizes small, limiting groups to no more than 8 participants, ensuring everyone gets the support and guidance they need to bring their creations to life.
Art for Life is perfect for those looking to return to creative classes after some time away or anyone wanting to build their confidence through art. It’s also a wonderful option for those receiving support from a carer or social prescriber.

Our Wednesday afternoon classes are a fantastic way to make new friends while learning new skills, and many participants have shared how much they appreciate the positive impact these sessions have on their mental health and wellbeing.

Interested?
The classes are low-cost, priced at £10 per hour, and all resources are provided. Call us today to secure your space and join this supportive, creative community!
