Finding Nana

Event information

Another chance to book this highly experienced theatre company who specialise in big performances designed for small non-theatre spaces. Be prepared to laugh and cry out loud at the 2016 George Devine Award joint winning writer Jane Upton’s autobiographical new play which challenges memory and memory loss, with the occasional fart and a shot of sherry along the way. This is a highly personal account of writer Jane Upton’s journey to rediscover the Grandma she lost to Alzheimer’s. The play charts how she went back to the hotel room she shared every summer with her in the Isle of Wight, and how she pieces together a portrait of the woman she remembered as well as the young woman she never knew. It’s a tribute to a lost life and will have moments that will touch anyone struggling with the missed opportunities to ask questions of close older relatives. Jane’s story reveals the half-remembered stories as well uncovering the unknown ones. ‘When I look back and remember her, the happiest times were on the Isle of Wight during our summer holidays. She was always nut brown, stretched out in the sunshine, or playing with us on the edge of the sea. She was always smiling and laughing and singing. The Isle of Wight, nostalgic and reminiscent, surrounded by the sea, struck me as a metaphor for dementia…I wanted to find her there.’
